As the saying goes “Practice makes a man perfect”, it's very essential that one must gain the practical experience to perform better.

While I agree, practice makes our skills good enough, but implementing the right magnitude of knowledge practically in a given context becomes much more important than the knowledge itself.

It was during my MBA days that I was exposed to many concepts of management, theories, models, systems etc. But, when I hit the industry and started working it was more than a realization that 'theoretical knowledge' is just so inadequate and deficient in many ways.

Can academics fill that gap ?? – It's both Yes and No.!

Yes – While they can tie up with industry to provide a skill gap program altogether.
No – Because it can't be learned in a limited period of time and few practices and procedures are organization-specific and that's not standardized.

A question can always arise “How one can gain practical exposure ” in-spite of all these challenges. – There is a concept called Internship wherein company provides an opportunity for an individual to work in his/her area of interest for a certain period of time in which one can get clarity of the Onboarding Process, Organization Structure, Training, and Developmental needs and glimpses of Business operations. Gaining practical knowledge helps one to develop self-confidence, approachability towards solving real-time problems and improving professional & people skills that enhances opportunities.

This program will make an individual gain a certain level of confidence and they will be in a better position to gauge the organization's expectations. Knowing how to do is more significant than knowing what to do. In the present competitive world, it's highly recommended that we should analyze our strengths and weakness and work towards it. It's not difficult to acquire a job but it's not easy to get into right career path unless we know the practicality and its repercussions. The corporate world unfolds the reality in a very short span of time.

Colleges will concentrate on covering the syllabus and in most cases, it lacks providing practical exercise to students. Practical knowledge is not only necessary for fetching the right job but also to fit oneself in a successful career move. Professional development skills also play a major role in helping students to get attractive jobs.

While there are umpteen challenges for all to get this exposure, 'Finishing School' is the concept which is a great idea to bridge that gap from theoretical to a practical work environment. Additionally, it incorporates multi-level organizational practices and procedures which are in place.

By gaining practical knowledge, an individual can easily get into the corporate sector as they would have already spent their time which will make them settle in and which in turn would provide them better career opportunities.

As they say – Education has produced a vast population that is able to read but unable to distinguish what is worth reading.

Similarly, studying during academics is only gaining knowledge. Much more important attribute is beyond it on how do I translate that knowledge into intelligence and implement it in action which should be customizable and that is practically done by finishing schools.
